February 2017 Overview

Pillar: Leadership

Theme: Shaping the vessel: Cleansing from the inside out

Time Period:

Scripture:

"...the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance,
but the Lord looketh on the heart."

- 1 Samuel 16:7

Memorization:

“Many people try to change themselves spiritually and they inevitably come to the same conclusion: ‘I can’t do it by myself’.  Only Jesus Christ can cleanse and change a human heart.  Only the Holy Spirit, sent by Christ to dwell in us, can guide our decision making, soften our hearts, and trigger our conscience so that we will make choices and initiate Chritlike responses.  We must never forget – we are the clay.  He is the potter!”

January 2017 Overview

Pillar: Property & Work

Theme: Centering the clay: Having an eye single to the glory of God

Time Period:
INDIA and the Middle East

Scripture:

"And if your eye be single to my glory, your whole bodies shall be filled with light, and there shall be no darkness in you; and that body which is filled with light comprehendeth all things."
- D&C 88:67

Memorization:

“When He said, ‘Be perfect,’ He meant it. He meant that we must go in for the full treatment. It is hard; but the sort of compromise we are all hankering after is harder—in fact, it is impossible. It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.”

November 2016 Overview

Pillar: The Role of God

Theme: Preparing the clay: Submitting to Divine treatments to achieve our full potential

Time Period:
Ancient Greece & Rome

Scripture:
"As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand."
- Jeremiah 18:6

Memorization:

“The chastisements we have had from time to time have been for our good, and are essential to learn wisdom, and carry us through a school of experience we never could have passed through without.  I hope, then, that we may learn from the experience we have had to be faithful, and humble and be passive in the hands of God and do His commandments”

- Wilford Woodruff

October 2016 Overview

Pillar: Liberty

Theme: We are the clay:  We each have special purpose and unique worth

Time Period:
Ancient Egypt

Scripture:

"Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God."
- D&C 18:10

Memorization:

“For nearly six thousand years, God has held you in reserve to make your appearance in the final days before the Second Coming. Every previous gospel dispensation has drifted into apostasy, but ours will not. … God has saved for the final inning some of his strongest children, who will help bear off the kingdom triumphantly. And that is where you come in, for you are the generation that must be prepared to meet your God. … Make no mistake about it—you are a marked generation. There has never been more expected of the faithful in such a short period of time as there is of us. … Each day we personally make many decisions that show where our support will go. The final outcome is certain—the forces of righteousness will finally win. What remains to be seen is where each of us personally, now and in the future, will stand in this fight—and how tall we will stand. Will we be true to our last-days, foreordained mission?”

Vision Day 2016!

Hello Vanguardians!

The start of our school year is fast approaching and with that comes the first day of class and Vision Day!

Vision Day is a day where we get to know each other, play fun games and find out what Vanguard is
all about.

Here are a few assignments for you to have finished before Vision Day:

1 - Read the book "Do Hard Things" by Alex & Brett Harris

2 - In the ebook "19 Apps Leadership Education for College Students" by Oliver DeMille, read App 7: Master the Cards.  It can be purchased on Amazon (The whole book is a fabulous read and would benefit all youth, but for our purposes this day you only need to read App 7).

3 - Bring your filled out goal sheet that you parents brought you home from parent meeting.  Please don't forget it!

Vision Day will be held on Thurs. Sept. 1 from 9:30am-3:30pm at the Brown's home in Spanish Fork.  This is our first day of class and those are the hours and location of every week's Vanguard day.

September 2016 Overview

Pillar: Life & the Pursuit of Happiness

Theme: Discovering the Potter:  Finding God

Time Period:

Scripture:

“But now, O Lord, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter;
and we all are the work of thy hand.”
- Isaiah 64:8

Memorization:

"Thus we have the formula for the search for God and the tools to accomplish the quest—faith, love, and prayer. Science has done marvelous things for man, but it cannot accomplish the things he must do for himself, the greatest of which is to find the reality of God. The task is not easy; the labor is not light; but as stated by the Master, 'Great shall be their reward and eternal shall be their glory.'” (D&C 76:6)
